What is Greenbuild and When is it Coming to Philadelphia?

The annual Greenbuild International Conference and Expo was launched in 2002 as the world's largest conference and expo dedicated to green building. Greenbuild features three days of inspiring speakers, invaluable networking opportunities, industry showcases, LEED workshops and tours of the host city's green buildings. The conference has been hosted in major cities across the United States, including Chicago, Boston, Phoenix, and Denver. Greenbuild 2011 was in Toronto, Ontario, and Greenbuild 2012 will be in San Francisco.

In 2013, Greenbuild will be located in Philadelphia, running from November 20th-22nd. Because it will not have been on the East Coast for five years running, and because of Philadelphia's proximity to New York City and Washington, D.C., conference organizers at the U.S. Green Building Council expect that over 30,000 attendees will be at the conference. They will come from all over the country and world, but about a third will be from the Mid-Atlantic region.

The Greenbuild team at the U.S. Green Building Council is responsible for overall conference planning and management, including running the process by which sessions are chosen, soliciting sponsors and managing registration, conference greening, and working with the local host chapter.  www.greenbuildexpo.org

How Will DVGBC Be Involved with the Conference Itself?

DVGBC will be the official host chapter for Greenbuild 2013.  The role of the host chapter evolves from year to year, but some of our official responsibilities may include:

  • Forming a high-level Host Committee
  • Working with official Bio-Regional Partners (roughly 20 -30) on outreach for the Conference
  • Working with USGBC on Regional VIP Recognition and Conference Speaking Opportunities
  • Volunteer Staffing and Coordination
  • Green Building Tours and Offsite Education
  • Identifying and Coordinating a Legacy Project: the Legacy Project is meant to be a permanent gift of service to the city; targeted to serve a low-income community; supported by the community; equipped with an educational component

What’s the Opportunity for Our Region?

DVGBC's overall vision is that our efforts in the lead up to the conference and the positive visibility of the conference itself will help increase investment in the region and position it as a vibrant, sustainable, culturally rich place that people want to live, work, and learn.  We’d like to find partners who share that vision and are committed to helping us think through how best to accomplish that goal.

Some goals we’d like to work on with our partners will include:  Ensuring that regional residents and others have a better idea of how much good sustainability work is happening as a way to build momentum for the conference; garnering broader, national visibility for the region; providing visibility to the work of our regional partners as a way to strengthen the work of individual organizations while achieving better collective impact; using the Greenbuild time horizon to help accomplish or give visibility to goals our partners may have already set and as a way to encourage a new sustainability goal that will have regional impact; efficiently and effectively managing our participation in the event and engaging regional stakeholders to maximum benefit for all.

What’s the Opportunity for Me or My Business or Organization?  How Can I Get Involved in the Lead Up to Greenbuild?

First and Foremost, Let Us Know You're Interested!

Even if you're not ready to volunteer or otherwise get your company or organization involved, we'd love to know that you're interested and keep you informed of opportunities. DVGBC is currently developing all the ways in which local organizations and individuals can be involved, but listed below are the existing opportunities to engage.  Sign-up for updates now and tell us what you're interested in

For Companies, Organizations, Schools and Institutions

Participate in the 2013 Challenge

You can participate in the challenge by committing to one sustainability goal that your organization, company, or institution will commit to completing by November 1, 2013. DVGBC will publicize these pledges on its website, social media, events, and via other creative means in the lead up to and during the conference. The next major chance for recognition of your pledge is on September 27, 2012 during our Annual Green Building Celebration at the Barnes Foundation, featuring a LEED Platinum Plaque Ceremony and remarks by USGBC CEO Rick Fedrizzi.
Find out more and commit early to get the most visibility for your pledge.

Get Involved in a Committee

DVGBC will begin forming official committees in late spring or early summer. Because we anticipate a high level of interest, committee participation will be through invitations and also through an application process. Please let us know what your organization’s interest is on the survey so that we can be in contact with you when committees form. Look for committee applications to be available on June 1,2012

Become a DVGBC Greenbuild Partner

Becoming a partner means that you will commit to and receive the following:

  • Submit two Sustainable Success Stories via an online form on the DVGBC website during 2012, and two in 2013.  DVGBC will use these stories to pitch stories to the media, on our website, in newsletters, and in our social media outreach in order to give partner organizations visibility.
  • Agree to mentioning Greenbuild 2013 and your The 2013 Challenge pledge twice per year in 2012 on your organization’s website, social media, or newsletters and doing so 5 -10 times in 2013.
  • Attendance at 2 meetings per year of DVGBC Partner Organizations for briefings and discussion
  • Consider a collaboration with another DVGBC Greenbuild Partner on a 2013 Challenge project.
  • Submit your The 2013 Challenge via our website by April 15, 2012. DVGBC will list partner organizations and pledges on its website, social media outreach, media communications, and other outreach efforts during the lead up to Greenbuild 2013.

Become a Greenbuild 2013 Bio-Regional Partner

These partners will be determined by DVGBC through an application process, and will be given extra support from USGBC. It may involve a financial commitment. In the past, official Bio-Regional Partners have been limited to no more than 20. The Memorandum of Understanding is yet to be determined, but past recognition and support from USGBC, in return for outreach, has included:

  • Recognition on the Greenbuild website, program, and conference, materials
  • Recognition during the conference
  • Support from USGBC in promoting the conference

Attend Greenbuild 2012 in San Francisco

If you haven’t yet been to Greenbuild, the best way to understand how large and impactful a conference it is to see for yourself. Especially if your company or organization wants to be involved in Greenbuild 2013, it may be worth it to send representatives to this year’s conference to generate ideas about how to make it successful in our own region. For Individuals

Apply to be on a DVGBC Greenbuild Committee

DVGBC will begin forming official committees  in early summer.  Because we anticipate a high level of interest, committee participation will be through invitations and also through an application process; we will also give preference to DVGBC members in good standing.  Working on a committee will be a substantial volunteer commitment, and we will be working throughout the winter and spring to determine which committees we’ll need, and what the qualifications and commitment will be.  Look for committee applications to be available on June 1, 2012.

Become a Member and Participate in Planning

As an individual member of the Delaware Valley Green Building Council, you can serve on committees for the organization. A Greenbuild working group will form soon made up of leadership from within our membership base. It will be a place to get up-to-date information on the organization’s work around Greenbuild, discuss new plans and ideas, and find out about opportunities to help us reach our goals.   Become a member today.

What’s the U.S. Green Building Council and What’s Its Role in Greenbuild?

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization committed to a prosperous and sustainable future through cost-efficient and energy-saving green buildings.

The Greenbuild team at the U.S. Green Building Council is responsible for overall conference planning and management, including running the process by which sessions are chosen, soliciting sponsors and managing registration, conference greening, and working with the local host chapter.

USGBC works toward its mission of market transformation through its LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)  green building certification program, robust educational offerings, a nationwide network of chapters and affiliates, the annual Greenbuild International Conference & Expo, professional credentials and advocacy in support of public policy that encourages and enables green buildings and communities. USGBC leads an unlikely diverse constituency of builders and environmentalists, corporations and nonprofit organizations, elected officials and concerned citizens, and teachers and students.

Buildings in the United States are responsible for 39% of CO2 emissions, 40% of energy consumption, 13% water consumption and 15% of GDP per year, making green building a source of significant economic and environmental opportunity. Greater building efficiency can meet 85% of future U.S. demand for energy, and a national commitment to green building has the potential to generate 2.5 million American jobs.  www.usgbc.org
